move it out march

I have been mulling over this idea for some time and couldn't resist the excellent alliteration opportunity this new month affords, so I hereby declare this month to be:

Move It Out March

The idea is simple. Our house is drowning in things such as baby high chairs and unneeded computer monitors. As a matter of fact, it is not so much the house but the basement that is under junk water. This May marks our 8th year in this house -- we have never lived in one place so long before (for me, this will be the first time in my life that I have had such a permanent installation). The length of time is starting to show in the fact that we practically need a map to get around down there, so deep is the pile of stuff we no longer need and/or use. So I have pledged to spend at least 15 minutes every day just trying to get rid of it, along the lines of a good old-fashioned Victorian spring cleaning, albeit in slow mo (a great period word, there).

Now, here's the catch. I could rent a dumpster and be done with the whole project in the approximately two hours it would take me and my minions to haul it all up the stairs. But I am going to do my best to find the stuff a home where it will be more appreciated and put to good use. I am going to employ my assistants, freecycle and craig's list. I am going to make some donations to the church rummage sale and the library book sale and the Salvation Army. And undoubtedly there will be a good amount of trash to dispose of as well, such as the nine months worth of feed bags that I hauled out of the barn this morning, so I will be doing my best to divest our lives of those little build-ups, as well as anything that is so broken or beyond its useful life that it just needs to be put out of its misery already.

If I were more organized I would have a fancy little button already designed for fellow bloggers to decorate your blog with, but I'm not, so I don't. Besides, let's face it, taking the time to design the button would be a prime procrastination technique, and look how far that's gotten me.

So who's up for joining me? Let's move it out!
